Kyle Brennan
1986-2007
My youngest child, Kyle Brennan, died from a gunshot wound on the evening of February 16, 2007, at his Scientologist father’s Clearwater, Florida, apartment. Creative, talented, and ambitious, Kyle was not affiliated with the Church of Scientology and was only 20 years old. The circumstances surrounding his death are highly suspicious and raise serious concerns that deserve further investigation.
At the time, Kyle’s devout father was connected to influential Scientologists, whose beliefs are famously anti-psychiatry and anti-psychotropic medications. After his death, Kyle’s prescribed medication was found locked in the trunk of his father’s vehicle.
The Clearwater, Florida, Police Department conducted an investigation into the death of Kyle. The investigation was marked by unprofessional conduct, perjury, and criminal negligence. Many questions went unanswered, and Scientology-indoctrinated witnesses who’d perjured and contradicted themselves walked away without further questioning. As a result of the Clearwater Police’s negligence, a miscarriage of justice occurred.
When a child dies violently and unexpectedly, the impact on the family is devastating. It’s a heartbreak like no other, one filled with anguish and despair. After losing Kyle, I experienced overwhelming grief and a powerful urgency to make sense of the senseless, to understand how the tragedy in Clearwater unfolded. That urgency—that need—has not subsided.
The public, as well as state and federal lawmakers, must be educated regarding Scientology’s dangerous practices. Under the guise of religion, this belief system places its trusting adherents and others at risk of harm or even death. I hope Kyle’s story serves as a warning and prevents similar unnecessary tragedies in the future.
